UNSC to vote on a resolution against US decision on Jerusalem

NEW YORK, December 18, 2017 (WAFA) – The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote on Monday on a draft resolution that rejects US President Donald Trump’s recent decision recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

The draft resolution, which comes at the request of Egypt, says, “Any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

The draft resolution also calls for resolving the status of Jerusalem through negotiations and “deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem,” without mentioning the United States by name.

It also calls on all UN member states not to move their embassies or diplomatic missions to Jerusalem.

On December 6, Trump announced that the US would be moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The move was met with wide international condemnation as it goes against international resolutions on Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territories.
