Newspapers Review: Israeli police brutality during funeral highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 3, 2017 (WAFA) – The brutal Israeli police assault on participants in a funeral in East Jerusalem of a Palestinian who drowned in Lake Tiberius that left 35 people injured including one seriously was the highlight of the Monday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam said one person, among 35 injured in the assault, was reported in critical condition after he was hit by a rubber bullet in the eye causing him serious head injury. Nine others remain hospitalized.

The papers also said Israeli forces detained on Sunday 12 Palestinians, including lawmaker Khalida Jarrar, who was released from administrative detention only a while ago. Jarrar is a leading member in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and was elected to the Palestinian parliament in 2006.

Al-Quds reported in its main front page headline about an Israeli plan to expand Bethlehem-area settlements.

It also said in another story that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has removed the restriction on entry to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for Israeli lawmakers, which is expected to provoke strong reaction from Jordan, the official custodian on the Muslim holy places in occupied East Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli legal advisor gave legal status to buildings built by Israeli settlers on private Palestinian land in the West Bank.

It also said the army demolished for the second time in 48 hours a Jenin memorial for Khaled Nazzal, a local Palestinian leader killed by Israel.

The paper said a Hamas delegation left to Egypt to discuss implementation of recent understandings between the movement that rules Gaza and the Egyptian authorities, such as the establishment of a buffer zone along the Gaza-Egypt borders.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Addis Ababa, where he is expected to address the African Union Summit.
