Newspapers Review: Fatah’s meeting, Gaza electricity crisis focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 20, 2017 (WAFA) – Fatah Central Committee meeting chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas and the reduction of electricity supply to the besieged Gaza Strip dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Fatah Central Committee called on Palestinians not to intervene in the internal affairs of Arab states.

The dailies said the Central Committee refused attempts to impose guardianship over the Palestinian cause and called on Hamas to disband the administrative committee that runs Gaza and enable the national consensus government to exercise its authority.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh and prisoner Karim Younes were unanimously appointed as committee members.

They also reported the Israeli government started to cut electricity supply to the besieged Gaza Strip, meaning power would be provided for only two to three hours a day.

On the other hand, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida described Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s visit to Damascus Gate in East Jerusalem following the deadly attack that claimed the life of three Palestinians and an Israeli policewoman as “provocative.”

Al-Quds added the visit took place as the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem uprooted trees along the Sultan Suleiman Street in East Jerusalem.

It also reported Palestinian governor of Jerusalem Adnan Husseini warning the situation in East Jerusalem is about to explode as a result of Israeli pressure on and harassment of the Palestinian residents of the occupied city.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported the mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Muhammad Hussein calling on Muslims who visit Jerusalem to intensify their presence in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added in this regard extremist Jewish groups were pressuring Israeli officials to rename Sultan Suleiman Street after the policewoman killed in the attack.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported two Palestinian minors were shot and injured and 25 others suffocated during clashes with Israeli forces in Abu Dis town, east of East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli forces detained at least 20 Palestinians, including a blind man, as they conducted multiple predawn raids across the West Bank.

Al-Quds said Israeli forces imposed a blockade on the village of Deir Abu Mishal, northwest of Ramallah, for the fourth consecutive day following Friday’s Jerusalem attack carried out by three young residents of the village.

The dailies also reported the White House senior advisor and the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt will arrive in the region this week to discuss next steps to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Al-Quds explained if the two top aides have encouraging signs from Israelis and Palestinians, they would arrange a trilateral summit.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported President Mahmoud Abbas reiterating his full commitment to end the Palestinian division that was detrimental to the Palestinian cause.

Al-Ayyam said the upper house of the Swiss parliament and the Spanish government rejected an effort to criminalize the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement.
