Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight Israeli army killing of Palestinian in Gaza

RAMALLAH, June 10, 2017 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their main front page story Saturday the Israeli army shooting and killing of a Palestinian and injuring of 17 others during clashes at the Gaza borders.

Aaed Juma, 35, was shot in the head and killed in the clashes that broke out east of Jabaliya in protest against the 10-year long Israeli siege of Gaza. Four others were also hit by live bullets and the rest by rubber bullets or suffered from tear gas inhalation.

Clashes broke out on Friday as well in several West Bank locations against settlements and the construction of the segregation wall. Soldiers responded with showering the protesters with tear gas causing many suffocation cases, according to the dailies.

Al-Quds said Israeli settlers vandalized Palestinian-owned cars in East Jerusalem and set fire to fields in the Nablus area causing extensive damage to trees.

The papers said an estimated 300,000 Palestinian Muslims attended the second Friday of Ramadan prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. They printed pictures of the crowds who filled the yards of the mosque compound.

Al-Quds said 15,000 people attended the Friday prayer at the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron.

In other news, the papers said Hamas forces abducted Palestine TV correspondent in Gaza, Fouad Jaradeh, after raiding his home. No reason was given for the abduction.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Fatah spokesman Usama Qawasmi calling on Hamas to immediately end the division and not to interfere in internal Arab affairs.

It quoted a spokeswoman for the Red Cross in Gaza saying the international organization exerted extensive effort to get information about 19 Palestinians who have been missing since Israel’s war on Gaza in 2014. She said families of the missing Palestinians have been seeking information about them but so far nothing has come up.

A Gaza prisoners committee criticized the Red Cross’ statements and said that they were unacceptable because they put the victim and aggressor on equal footing. The committee called for a boycott of a Ramadan Iftar the Red Cross has planned in Gaza on Sunday, saying people were expected to hear good news during the Iftar but since this will not happen then there is no need to attend it.

Al-Ayyam said two brothers and their uncle were killed in Gaza during a family feud.

It said police was also investigating the death of a woman in Hebron in the West Bank.

It also said the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) discovered a tunnel under two UNRWA schools in Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza. It said the tunnel does not have exit or entrance points and does not go anywhere.

In other Arab and international news, the papers continued to report on the conflict between Qatar and other Arab and Gulf countries, as well as on the British election results and the problems facing US President Donald Trump at home following the testimony of the former FBI director.
