PLO turns 53 years

RAMALLAH, June 1, 2017 (WAFA) – The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) turned 53 years on Thursday.

The first Palestinian National Council meeting in Jerusalem announced on June 1, 1964 the creation of the PLO as a national liberation movement and named Ahmad Shuqeiri as its chairman.

Yasser Arafat became chairman of the PLO after the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, a post he kept until his death in 2004 to be succeeded by President Mahmoud Abbas.

The PLO was recognized by world governments as the sole, legitimate representative of the Palestinian people everywhere.
