Newspapers Review: Killing of Palestinian near Jerusalem camp focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, November 26, 2016 (WAFA) – The killing of a Palestinian teen by Israeli forces at a military checkpoint near the East Jerusalem refugee camp of Shufat hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Saturday.

Al-Ayyam said the teen was killed for allegedly attempting to carry out a stabbing attack even though his family has contested the Israeli version and said its son was going to a dialysis session at a Jerusalem hospital.

Highlighted the dispersion with force of the weekly Friday marches, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces attacked peaceful marches with tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steel bullets, causing scores of protestors to suffer from suffocation.

While al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida covered the killing of the Palestinian in their main items, al-Quds opted to highlight wildfires that engulfed Haifa and Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said residents were finally allowed back to their homes after wildfires in Haifa were contained. They added wildfires erupted in mountainous areas surrounding Jerusalem.

Al-Quds highlighted Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s remarks blaming wildfires on the Palestinian Authority (PA). Al-Ayyam reported Safad Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu as posting a ruling that permits shooting of Arabs for being responsible for causing the fires.

Al-Quds reported Israeli environmentalists, including Professor Yohay Carmel from Technion, as confirming the wildfires were caused by climate changes.

The dailies also said Palestinian Civil Defense (PCD) crews assisted in putting out wildfires that engulfed Jerusalem and Haifa.

Al-Ayyam added PCD crews have extinguished all wildfires across the West Bank, while al-Hayat al-Jadida reported PCD Director-General Yousef Nassar as stating PCD took a “moral stance” through offering such assistance in Israel.

Highlighting settlement construction plans, al-Quds said Israel advanced plans to construct 140 new settler units in the Jerusalem district settlement of Ramat Shlomo.

The dailies said Palestinian hunger striking detainee Anas Shadid was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the Israeli hospital of Asaf Harofeh Medical Center following deterioration in his health.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva in Ramallah.

Al-Quds reported Abbas as stating the French initiative to convene the international peace conference is the only way out to salvage the internationally-supported two-state solution.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported him as stating the Palestinian leadership has cooperated with all international efforts to revive the stagnant Middle East peace process.

Moreover, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Israel decried the French government’s decision to publish new regulations obliging importers and retailers to label products originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

They said the Lebanese military responded to Palestinian demands to halt the construction of a wall around Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon.
