Health of Palestinian Hunger Striking Detainee Deteriorates

RAMALLAH, April 21, 2016 (WAFA) – The health condition of Palestinian hunger striking detainee in Israeli jails Sami Janazra has deteriorated, after 50 days of hunger strike against being held in jail without charge or trial, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS).

Janazra, 43 years old from al-Fawwar refugee camp near Hebron has been experiencing multiple health issues, including severe muscle contractions and repeated fainting, following 50 days of hunger strike in protest of his illegal administrative detention, without charge or trial.

A father of three, Janazra was detained multiple times by Israeli authorities, and spent more than seven years in jail as a political prisoner.

He was last re-detained on November 15, 2015, and was placed under administrative detention for the second time in a row.

Palestinians often resort to hunger strike to protest their detention without charge or trial.

Israel routinely uses administrative detention against Palestinians. Statistics show that over the years, thousands of Palestinians have been held in Israeli custody as administrative detainees for renewable periods of time.

In April 2015, the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) expressed concern by the continued and increasing use of administrative detention by Israeli authorities against Palestinians.
