CAIRO, 19 August 2026 (WAFA) - The Arab League condemned on Wednesday the dangerous developments surrounding Israel's announcement that it had begun establishing a facility to carry out death sentences against Palestinian detainees held in Israeli detention centers.
The Arab League warned that carrying out death sentences against Palestinian detainees by the Israeli occupation authorities would constitute a war crime warranting international accountability.
It said the move represented a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in violations of the rights of Palestinian detainees and a blatant breach of international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and its protocols, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit the application of the death penalty in occupied territories and affirm the protection of detainees from inhumane or arbitrary treatment.
It stressed that the passage of the death penalty law in March and the current preparations to establish the infrastructure for its implementation form part of a systematic policy aimed at eliminating the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people, and turning Israeli detention centers into sites for executions, in flagrant violation of the principles of justice and international law.
It held the occupation authorities fully responsible for any consequences arising from these criminal policies, while calling on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, the UN Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court, to take immediate and decisive measures to halt these practices, provide international protection for Palestinian detainees, and hold Israeli officials accountable for these violations.
