Jerusalem Church leaders denounce attack on Greek Orthodox Church in Jordan

JERUSALEM, October 24, 2026 (WAFA) — The Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem condemned the terrorist attack targeting St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the Hamoud area of Jordan’s southern Karak Governorate, which left several people dead and dozens injured. They expressed solidarity with Jordan and its people in confronting the attack.

In a statement, they said the terrorist attack on unarmed civilians constitutes a grave crime against humanity and a flagrant violation of sacred religious and human values. They added that it also targets the Christian community and Jordan’s national fabric, which brings Muslims and Christians together in a spirit of unity and brotherhood.

They extended their condolences to the victims’ families and expressed solidarity with Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Jordan. They also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The church leaders stressed that terrorist acts would not succeed in undermining the unity and cohesion of the Jordanian people. They commended King Abdullah II and the Jordanian people for rejecting the attack.

They called on all churches across the region to ring their bells on Saturday at noon Jordan time as an expression of solidarity and a prayer for the souls of the victims and the recovery of the injured.
