BERLIN, August 17, 2026 (WAFA) — Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Member Macit Karaahmetoğlu expressed on Monday his support for the appeal made by the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Germany, Laith Arafeh, to reintroduce the question of German recognition of the State of Palestine to the political agenda.
Karaahmetoğlu reaffirmed his backing for Palestinian efforts aimed at encouraging Berlin to recognize the State of Palestine.
The announcement followed a meeting held today between Karaahmetoğlu and Ambassador Arafeh, during which they reviewed the latest political and on-the-ground developments in the occupied Palestinian Territory, alongside the issue of German recognition.
Ambassador Arafeh briefed the German official on the dangerous and persistent escalation across the occupied Territory, noting the intensification of colonial settlement expansion, land grab and annexation, as well as attempts to create new facts on the ground that threaten the viability of the two-state solution.
Arafeh underscored the significance of German recognition of the State of Palestine as a vital political step toward safeguarding the two-state solution and preserving prospects for peace.
He emphasized the necessity for Germany to assume an active role in upholding the rights of the Palestinian people and supporting international initiatives dedicated to ending the occupation.
In response, Karaahmetoğlu endorsed Ambassador Arafeh's call to place the issue of Palestinian statehood recognition back on the German political agenda, explicitly affirming his support for Palestinian endeavors in this regard.
He noted that the majority of countries worldwide, including several European nations, already recognize the State of Palestine as a sovereign state.
He added that German recognition could serve as an effective catalyst for the two-state solution and does not need to be reserved as the final outcome of a protracted political process.
