RAMALLAH, July 16, 2026 (WAFA) – The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hussein Ibrahim Taha, sent two official letters; the first to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Tone Kajer, and the second to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, expressing the OIC's concern regarding media reports about the Slovenian government's intention to withdraw its recognition of the State of Palestine and move its embassy to occupied Jerusalem.
In the letters, Taha said that any decision by Slovenia to revoke its recognition of Palestine and move its embassy to occupied Jerusalem would constitute a flagrant violation of international law and UN Security Council Resolutions 476, 478, and 2334. He stressed that such a move would contradict the European Union's unified position, which does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.
He further warned that such decision would undermine the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, infringes upon the rights of the Palestinian people and the sentiments of Muslims and Christians, and will have serious political consequences for Slovenia's relations with the Islamic world and damage its international credibility.
In his letter to the High Representative of the European Union, the Secretary-General warned that allowing any EU member state to contradict the long-standing European position would set a dangerous precedent and encourage further unilateral and illegal actions that violate international law.
He called on the European Union, under the leadership of Kallas, to uphold its responsibilities and encourage Slovenia to maintain its principled recognition of the State of Palestine and to refrain from any actions that would prejudge the final status of Jerusalem.
The Secretary-General concluded his letters by affirming the OIC’s commitment to strengthening strategic relations with Slovenia and other European countries.
He expressed his hope that Slovenia would maintain its firm recognition of the State of Palestine, rescind its decision to move its embassy, and act as a constructive force for peace and stability in the Middle East. He emphasized his confidence that the EU’s active participation would be a credible force for achieving justice and stability in the region and beyond.
