Trump says memorandum of understanding with Iran to end conflict is "over"

ANKARA, July 8, 2026 (WAFA) – US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Iran to end the conflict was "over," adding that he no longer wanted to engage with Tehran.

Trump made the remarks in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit in the Turkish capital.

His remarks came after Iran launched strikes targeting US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for a wave of US strikes on Iranian targets, which Washington said were in response to attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials said air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain and Kuwait to warn of incoming attacks, while Kuwait's military said its air defense systems intercepted hostile missile and drone attacks.

Earlier, the United States carried out fresh military strikes in response to attacks targeting three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier reports by Iranian media said explosions were heard on Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal, as well as on Qeshm Island and in the southern coastal cities of Sirik and Bandar Abbas.

Iran's Press TV also reported hearing several explosions in the southern part of Kharg Island.

A US official told Reuters that the strikes targeted Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, surface-to-air missile batteries, anti-ship cruise missiles, and drone launch sites.

Oil prices rise

In a move that could deal a significant blow to the agreement, Washington on Tuesday revoked a general license allowing Iran to sell oil on international markets.

Oil prices rose by more than three percent following the US announcement.
