RAMALLAH, June 23, 2026 (WAFA) – Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh met on Tuesday with a senior European delegation headed by European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica to discuss strengthening relations between the European Union and Palestine, as well as the latest political and humanitarian developments in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The delegation included European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Christophe Bigot and EU Representative to Palestine Ambassador Alexandre Stutzmann. The meeting, held in Ramallah, was attended by Fatah Central Committee member Leila Ghannam, Presidential Adviser for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi Al-Khalidi, and Head of the Vice President’s Office Aya Al-Muhaisen.
Discussions focused on political and field developments in the occupied Palestinian territory, including ongoing attacks by Israeli colonists, escalating Israeli violations in the occupied West Bank, the withholding of Palestinian revenues, and the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip amid the continued war and blockade.
Al-Sheikh stressed that the Palestinian leadership remains committed to advancing democratic governance and the political process in a manner that safeguards Palestinian national rights and supports a serious political path based on international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions. He reaffirmed plans to hold parliamentary elections in November and presidential elections next year.
The Vice President also underscored the importance of the European role in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and called for intensified international efforts to end Israeli violations, stop the war on Gaza, lift the blockade, release withheld Palestinian funds, and enable the Palestinian government to carry out its responsibilities in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Al-Sheikh praised the European Union’s humanitarian and development assistance and reiterated Palestine’s commitment to ongoing reform programs, including governance, security and justice sector reforms, social protection, and improvements in education and healthcare services.
Commissioner Šuica reaffirmed the European Union’s continued support for Palestine and its reform agenda. She said the EU is closely monitoring developments in the Palestinian territory and supports efforts aimed at achieving stability in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as reviving a political horizon based on the two-state solution and international law.
