LISBON, May 19, 2026 (WAFA) - President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro, on Tuesday awarded Palestinian journalist Rami Abou Jamous the 31st North-South Prize of the Council of Europe at the Portuguese parliament in Lisbon.
Abu Jamous, a renowned war correspondent whose independent reporting has brought first-hand accounts of life under conflict to global audiences, was presented the prize in recognition of his exceptional contribution to raising awareness and fostering understanding across regions, as well as the perilous conditions faced by journalists in Gaza today.
Since Abu Jamous participated online, his prize was accepted on his behalf by Sarra Grira, Tunisian-born journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Orient XXI.
Speaking during the prize awarding ceremony, President Seguro Siguro praised Gaza journalists for their courage and for the risks they take every day to report the truth amid ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians.
The awarding ceremony was presided by the President of the Assembleia da República, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, in presence of Palestinian ambassador to Portugal, Rawan Sulaiman, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Antonio Gutiérrez Limones, the Director of Programme Co-ordination of the Council of Europe, Claus Neukirch, among others.
Ambassador Sulaiman stressed that this recognition serves as a tribute to the bravery of all Palestinian journalists and to the sacrifices they make in defense of truth and press freedom.
