AL-BIREH, April 30, 2026 (WAFA) – The Environment Quality Authority announced on Thursday that the State of Palestine has officially joined the Adaptation Fund, which supports developing countries in addressing the impacts of climate change, after completing all required technical and procedural requirements for membership.
The authority said in a statement that this achievement is the result of continuous diplomatic and technical efforts, followed up by relevant Palestinian institutions, aimed at enhancing Palestine’s access to international climate finance mechanisms and supporting national climate change adaptation plans.
It explained that the accession process began in early 2025 with the submission of an official membership application, followed by a series of technical meetings and sessions with Fund representatives on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), until all relevant requirements were met.
The authority noted that the official notification recently received confirmed that the State of Palestine had met the approved conditions, enabling it to benefit from funding allocated by the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) for adaptation projects, which may reach around $40 million for member states.
Head of the Environment Quality Authority, Zaghloul Samhan, said that the next phase will witness joint work with relevant ministries and national institutions to prepare a package of strategic projects, in line with the national climate change adaptation plan and the nationally determined contributions plan.
He added that this accession represents an important step in strengthening the State of Palestine’s presence in international environmental forums and expanding opportunities to secure funding to support the resilience of vital sectors in confronting increasing climate challenges.
