UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on Palestine, Foreign Ministry welcomes move

GENEVA, March 27, 2026 (WAFA) – The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, concerning the obligation to uphold accountability and justice, following the vote in favor of the resolution by member states.

Twenty-four countries voted in favor of the resolution, 19 abstained, and four voted against it.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the resolution, affirming that it underscores the commitment to ensuring accountability for those who commit violations and crimes against the Palestinian people, guaranteeing that there is no impunity, and achieving justice.

The Ministry highlighted the special significance of the resolution amid the current circumstances, noting that the Israeli occupation continues to commit serious and systematic violations of international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law, alongside escalated attacks and terrorism by colonists, in a context marked by persistent impunity and lack of accountability.

The Ministry, in a statement, expressed appreciation for the positions of the countries that voted in favor, which reflect a commitment to the principles of international justice, the protection of human rights, and the rule of law. It stressed that these positions represent a crucial step toward strengthening accountability and combating impunity, and thanked the countries for their role in sponsoring and adopting the resolution.

The Ministry stressed that the adoption of this resolution embodies the responsibility of the international community, particularly member states, to uphold their legal obligations under international law. This includes the duty to ensure respect for the Geneva Conventions, refrain from recognizing the illegal situation arising from the occupation, and avoid providing any support that sustains it, in accordance with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. The Court affirmed states’ responsibility not to recognize, assist, or support the continuation of the occupation, including refraining from supplying the occupying power with weapons or equipment that could be used to commit further crimes and violations against the Palestinian people in violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

The ministry expressed its rejection of the positions of the countries that did not support the resolution, noting that such positions encourage Israel and its war criminals to continue their criminal approach against the Palestinian people, stressing that accountability is the foundation of justice and the right to peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates called on the international community to take practical and effective measures to implement the provisions of this resolution, including ensuring legal accountability for the Israeli occupation forces and colonists, and all those who incite to commit crimes against the Palestinian people and their land, supporting relevant international mechanisms, and enabling victims to access effective remedies, contributing to ending ongoing violations, achieving justice, and safeguarding the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
