Fuel and spare parts shortage threatens Gaza’s healthcare system

GAZA, March 17, 2026 (WAFA) – Medical sources in the Gaza Strip reported that Israeli authorities continue to prevent the entry of oil and spare parts necessary for the maintenance and operation of electrical generators, posing a threat to the already strained healthcare system in the Strip.

The sources explained that the monthly requirement for oil reaches 2,500 liters to ensure the generators' operation and the continuation of healthcare services. They noted that the remaining generators in hospitals and primary care centers have been operating for over two years, are dilapidated, and suffer frequent breakdowns.

They indicated that several vital hospital departments, such as intensive care units, surgical wards, neonatal units, emergency rooms, dialysis units, and diagnostic imaging services, are at risk of shutting down as the shortage of oil and spare parts worsens.

They confirmed that engineering and technical teams are working with limited and depleted resources to operate the generators.
