Arab League condemns Israeli decision to designate West Bank lands as "state land"

CAIRO, February 16, 2026 (WAFA) – The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States condemned the decision issued by the Israeli government to designate large areas of West Bank land as "state land."

In a statement issued today by the Department of Palestine and the Occupied Arab Territories, the General Secretariat considered this dangerous escalation a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions, particularly those of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly, which affirm the illegality of settlements and the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force.

The statement emphasized that this decision is a unilateral and invalid measure aimed at imposing new realities on the ground. It effectively constitutes a preliminary step towards the annexation of occupied Palestinian territory, thus entrenching the illegal settlement policy and undermining the prospects for achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution, in accordance with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The General Secretariat stressed that all measures aimed at altering the legal and historical status of the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, lack any legal legitimacy, will not produce any legal effects, and remain null and void under international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The General Secretariat warned that the continuation of these escalatory policies would exacerbate tensions, threaten security and stability in the region, and lead to further violence and instability. This necessitates urgent intervention from the international community, especially the Security Council, to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and exert pressure to halt all unilateral measures that violate international law.

The Arab League reiterated its commitment to the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent and sovereign state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
