Jordan–EU summit reaffirms two-state solution, urges urgent action on Gaza

AMMAN, January 8, 2026 (WAFA) — The Jordanian–European summit affirmed today that the two-state solution remains the only path to a just and comprehensive resolution of the Middle East conflict, with two states living side by side in peace, security, and mutual recognition in accordance with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

A statement released following the summit held on Thursday in the Jordanian capital, Amman, said the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip require urgent measures.

It called for the rapid, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, its sustainable and large-scale distribution throughout the Gaza Strip, and unrestricted access for the United Nations, its agencies, and humanitarian organizations in line with international humanitarian law. The statement welcomed Jordan’s humanitarian efforts in this regard.

The summit urged Israel to immediately release Palestinian clearance revenues and to expand correspondent banking relations between Israeli and Palestinian banks, describing both steps as essential to ensure the functioning of the Palestinian National Authority and its ability to provide basic services to citizens.

Jordan and the European Union expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, and strongly rejected and condemned any attempts at land annexation, attacks carried out by Israeli colonists, including against Christian communities, illegal colonies under international law, unilateral measures, and any forced displacement or transfer of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank.

The statement also called on Israel to reverse its colonization plan in the E1 area, warning that it undermines the two-state solution. It reaffirmed commitment to preserving the historic and legal status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem, including respect for the historic Jordanian custodianship.

Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi said during a press conference on the sidelines of the summit that Jordan and the European Union stressed the necessity of adhering to the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to protect civilians and prevent further escalation.

Safadi added that the summit extensively discussed the risks resulting from continued escalation in the West Bank and underscored the importance of joint efforts to contain tensions and prevent further deterioration, while reiterating the need to respect the historic and legal status quo in occupied Jerusalem and the role of custodianship in protecting holy sites.
