OIC holds extraordinary meeting on Somalia, reaffirms support for Palestinian rights

JEDDAH, January 1, 2025 (WAFA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held an extraordinary meeting of its Open-Ended Executive Committee at the level of Permanent Representatives on Thursday at its headquarters in Jeddah to discuss developments in the Federal Republic of Somalia following Israel's recognition of the self-proclaimed “Land of Somalia” as an independent state. More than 30 OIC member states participated in the meeting.

The State of Palestine was represented at the extraordinary meeting by Ambassador Hadi Shibli, Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the OIC, and Deputy Permanent Representative, First Counselor Nassim Al-Za'anin.

In a final statement, the participants condemned and categorically rejected Israel's recognition of the self-proclaimed “Land of Somalia”, affirming their full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and the commitment of all OIC member states to supporting Somalia's security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The meeting also adopted a paragraph specifically addressing the Palestinian issue, emphasizing the complete rejection of any connection between this measure and any attempts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people from their land.

The OIC affirmed its categorical rejection of any calls, plans, or policies aimed at any form of displacement, whether within or outside Palestine, including the Gaza Strip, or at altering the geographic or demographic composition of the occupied Palestinian territory.

The statement warned all states against cooperating, directly or indirectly, with Israeli displacement schemes, as any such cooperation constitutes a grave violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and may entail legal accountability.

The meeting condemned the racist decisions of the Israeli Knesset against the Palestinian people and prisoners, as well as the annexation and illegal settlement plans aimed at altering the geographic and demographic status of the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem, with the goal of perpetuating the Israeli colonial occupation and undermining the two-state solution.

The statement called for ending the illegal Israeli colonial occupation, based on international law, relevant UN resolutions and international judicial opinions, including dismantling the colonial settlement system.
