UN slams Israeli law cutting electricity and water to UNRWA offices in Jerusalem

NEW YORK, January 1, 2025 (WAFA) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Israeli authorities' decision to cut off electricity and water to facilities belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem, the UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Thursday.

Dujarric added in a press statement that this move would further impede the agency's ability to operate and carry out its activities. He noted that the UN Privileges and Immunities Agreement remains in effect for UNRWA, its property and assets, and its officials and other staff.

He emphasized that UNRWA is an integral part of the United Nations, and its facilities are protected under international law.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also condemned the move, stressing  that it is part of a systematic and ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and obstruct its role in providing assistance to Palestinian refugees.

The Israeli Knesset gave final approval on Tuesday to a bill authorizing the cutting off of electricity and water to UNRWA offices in occupied East Jerusalem, and it will take effect immediately.

The Israeli army radio reported that the Knesset approved, in its second and third readings, a bill to cut off electricity and water to UNRWA offices. The vote passed with 59 out of 120 members voting in favor and seven against.

The Knesset approved the bill l November, and after the initial vote, it was referred to the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee for preparation before the second and third readings.

During the voting session, Israeli Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen attempted to justify the decision, claiming that UNRWA provides a breeding ground for incitement and violence and has no right to continue operating.
