RAMALLAH, October 19, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas received on Sunday the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.
The UN official briefed the President on the results of his visit to the Gaza Strip, the difficult humanitarian conditions in the Strip, and on the efforts exerted by United Nations organizations to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinian citizens.
Fletcher also conveyed the greetings of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, to President Abbas.
For his part, President Abbas thanked Fletcher for his brave and necessary visit to the Gaza Strip, and for the important role played by UN organizations, emphasizing the critical role of UNRWA during this important period.
The President emphasized that UNRWA’s role is indispensable in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid and the restoration of the educational process, as well as in providing all necessary services to Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in all host countries.
On this occasion, President Abbas renewed his call to all concerned parties to commit to the first phase of the U.S. President's plan, to solidify the ceasefire, hand over hostages and prisoners, allow aid entry, ensure the withdrawal of occupation forces, proceed to reconstruction, and stop the Israeli government’s undermining of the Palestinian Authority and the two-state solution.
President Abbas also affirmed the readiness of the institutions of the State of Palestine to assume their full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip and link it with the West Bank through Palestinian laws, institutions, and personnel, with Arab and international support, and in cooperation with Arab and international stabilization forces, based on a Security Council resolution.
The President confirmed the State of Palestine's readiness to work with U.S. President Donald Trump and all mediators and partners, in order to complete the next phase towards achieving lasting peace in accordance with international peace resolutions.
