Heads of States join chorus calling for Gaza ceasefire, credible peace process

NEW YORK, September 24, 2025 (WAFA) – More heads of states on Wednesday called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and relaunching a credible peace process in the Middle East.

Speaking during general debate of the UNGA 80th session in New York, Latvia President Edgars Rinkēvičs stressed the need for urgent action to end Palestinian civilians’ suffering in Gaza.

“It is our duty to strengthen international cooperation to tackle the escalating crisis in Gaza. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza continues to spiral. Urgent action is needed to end civilian suffering,” he stated.

He reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and “safe” and “unconditional” access of humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip.

“The ongoing escalation confirms the need for a sustainable political solution, the need for two state solution in accordance with international parameters,” he added, while stressing the need to reach a just and lasting peace that addresses the Palestinian people’s legitimate aspirations.

Meanwhile, Switzerland President Karin Keller-Sutter said that Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza comes in a “new era of particularly extreme political and economic upheaval”.

She added that the Palestinian civilian population in the Strip were suffering a time when “a just and lasting peace in the ME still seems beyond reach.”

Meanwhile, Kenya’s President William Samoei Ruto underlined Kenya’s stance on human rights and humanitarian law, saying that “We cannot condemn suffering in one place and turn a blind eye in another”.

He slammed the international community for its policy of double standards in dealing with Palestinian people’s suffering and their question, saying: “The protection of civilian and respect for humanitarian law cannot be applied selectively. We cannot condemn suffering in one place and turn a blind eye in another.”

He expressed grave concern over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, calling for a permanent ceasefire, unconditional release of hostages and a credible political process towards a two-State solution.

“Only through such a process can the vision of a two-state solution be realized, where Israel and Palestine live side by side in peace, security, and stability,” he added.
