RAMALLAH, September 19, 2025 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas discussed Friday with French President Emmanuel Macron the final arrangements for convening the International Peace Conference in New York on September 22, in order to ensure its success and achieve its objectives.
During a telephone call, President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his gratitude to President Emmanuel Macron and to the friends in the French Republic for their joint leadership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, together with the participation of many countries in the international coalition, in convening the conference and mobilizing broad international support for further recognition of the State of Palestine.
The President also expressed appreciation for efforts to take irreversible steps to end the Israeli occupation, implement the two-state solution, and provide all forms of support to the State of Palestine and its people to build state institutions and implement reform programs.
The President also reaffirmed his determination to implement the national reform program and the commitments and pledges made by the State of Palestine in a letter sent to the presidency of the conference on June 9.
This includes holding presidential and parliamentary elections in 2026 after the end of the war, drafting a temporary Palestinian constitution within three months to amend the election law in line with international commitments and the new status of the State of Palestine, the principle of one state, one law, and one weapon, as well as assuming full responsibility in the Gaza Strip.
President Abbas stressed that there is no role for Hamas and that it must hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, affirming, “We do not want an armed state.”
They also addressed the dangers of unilateral measures that violate international law, including settlement activity and colonist terrorism, warned against the annexation of the occupied Palestinian Territory in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and affirmed their rejection of assaults on Islamic and Christian holy sites.
It was also agreed to continue coordination between both sides.
