Famine-related deaths in Gaza rise to 387 as malnutrition crisis deepens

GAZA, September 7, 2025 (WAFA) – Hospitals in the Gaza Strip recorded five new deaths in the past 24 hours, including three children, due to famine and severe malnutrition amid the total Israeli blockade on the region, according to local health authorities.

The latest deaths bring the total number of fatalities from hunger and malnutrition in the war-ridden region to 387, including 138 children.

Since the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) issued its alert earlier this year, 109 deaths linked to famine have been recorded, among them 23 children.

Hospitals in Gaza continue to receive new cases of malnutrition and famine around the clock, with medical teams overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis. An estimated 900,000 children in Gaza are currently suffering from hunger, and at least 70,000 have reached the stage of clinical malnutrition.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) previously warned that malnutrition rates among children under five have doubled between March and June 2025, as a direct result of the ongoing Israeli blockade on Gaza.
