JENIN, September 1, 2025 (WAFA) – The Israeli occupation's aggression on the city of Jenin and its camp has entered its seventh month, amid widespread destruction of infrastructure and homes, and the displacement of thousands of Palestinians from their homes.
Bashir Matahin, the director of public relations at the Jenin Municipality, told WAFA that the occupation has completely destroyed more than 600 homes since the start of its raid on the camp, and partially demolished nearly 1,000 housing units, displacing approximately 22,000 residents.
He added that the occupation army, which is permanently present in the Jenin camp, prevents any entry or exit, making it difficult for the municipality and its crews to accurately assess the damage.
He added, "From our observations of the camp, we realize that the occupation has completely changed the map of the camp, as several landmarks have been removed, in addition to the construction of numerous roads and streets within it."
He emphasized that the ongoing aggression is exacerbating the crisis of the displaced, in addition to the worsening of the capacity of students from Jenin camp to accommodate the displaced in schools close to their displacement sites.
He said, "We will witness overcrowding among students in several schools close to the locations where the displaced are located, especially since the occupation has closed eight schools in and around the camp."
Jenin Municipality estimates its direct losses at approximately $400 million, and indirect losses are worsening and increasing daily due to the ongoing economic crisis in the city, which began three years ago with the continued occupation incursions.
The number of incursions reached 62 before the latest aggression, which directly impacted commercial activity, causing the closure of several shops and the failure of many projects in Jenin.
According to the mills, a deep recession has hit the city's markets due to the closure of the Jalameh crossing and the presence of the occupation army. On a daily basis, in addition to the destruction of the city's main streets, which connect the commercial district to the villages to the west and south.
He confirmed that the Jenin Municipality began three months ago a process of rehabilitating the city's streets with full support from the Palestinian government. The rehabilitation of Nazareth Street, Haifa Street, and Nablus Street was undertaken to facilitate the movement of citizens to and from the city and to attempt to revive the commercial market.
He added that the municipality is working to rehabilitate the damaged neighborhoods in the city, especially the eastern neighborhood, specifically Madaris Street, which has been destroyed by Israeli bulldozers more than once.
Since the start of the aggression on the city and camp on January 21, 2020, 40 people have been killed, in addition to dozens injured and detained.
