RAMALLAH, August 8, 2025 (WAFA) - The President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, received a telephone call on Friday night from the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
During the telephone call, President Abbas expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation for the steadfast political positions of Greece in support of the Palestinian cause and the continuous humanitarian assistance provided by Greece to the Palestinian people, most recently the airdrops of Greek aid in cooperation with Jordan, especially in light of the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
The President commended Greece’s firm positions and the historic ties of friendship that bind Greece and Palestine, affirming joint efforts to protect churches and the Christian presence in Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land of Palestine.
President Abbas expressed deep appreciation for the positions of the friendly Greek people and the government’s positions in support of implementing the two-state solution in accordance with international law. He noted that these positions are consistent with those of the European Union, which reject the expansion of the Israeli military occupation in the Gaza Strip, call for a permanent ceasefire, demand the release of detainees and hostages, and urge the Palestinian National Authority to assume its responsibilities in the West Bank and Gaza in pursuit of peace, stability, and security for all.
The President warned of the seriousness of the decision taken by the Israeli government to reoccupy the Gaza Strip and displace its population to the south, slamming this decision as a new crime added to the series of Israeli crimes in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, calling for its immediate halt.
President Abbas confirmed that he would continue political action at all levels, including approaching the UN Security Council, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to mobilize international and regional positions against these schemes.
The President also stressed the importance of enabling the State of Palestine to fully assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages and detainees, and the entry of humanitarian aid. He emphasized Palestine’s assumption of security responsibilities with Arab and international support, as well as the withdrawal of occupation forces from the Gaza Strip to ensure the unity of governance, the rule of law, and legitimate arms under the umbrella of the State.
President Abbas further stressed the need to stop Israel’s unilateral actions that contradict international law, including colonial activities, annexation, colonists' terrorism and the attack on Islamic and Christian shrines, stressing the need to release the Palestinian tax revenues withheld by Israel.
The President reiterated the continued implementation of reform programs, the completion of Palestinian state institutions, and the progression toward general elections. The President emphasized efforts to advance the two-state solution within the framework of the upcoming international peace conference scheduled in New York next September, urging countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to take that step.
