RAMALLAH, July 24, 2025 (WAFA) – The Israeli Knesset approved late Wednesday night an extension of legislation that allows the detention of Palestinians from Gaza without charges, preventing them from meeting with legal lawyers for extended periods.
The extension law was approved with a majority vote of 30 in favor to 6 against.
According to Hebrew sources, the newly revised law authorizes Israeli courts to extend the prohibition on detainee access to lawyers by an additional 30 days at any stage of detention, not just during the initial period.
The law was first enacted in 2002, but was rarely used until it was expanded after October 7, 2023, it has allowed for detainees to be held for 30 days without indictment, and brought before a judge only after 45 days, often via remote Zoom hearings.
The law allows for a 45-day ban on meetings with an attorney, which may now be extended by an additional 30 days, following a court decision.
Yesterday, the Knesset voted on a statement expressing official support for imposing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank, marking the last major legislative move before parliament entered its summer recess.
