Israeli airstrike kills pregnant journalist, family in Gaza's Tel al-Hawa

GAZA, July 23, 2025 (WAFA) – The death toll from an Israeli airstike on a residential building in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, southwest of Gaza City, has surged  to nine, according to medical sources.

They said that among the victims were a pregnant journalist, her five children, and her husband.

The home belonged to the Sha’er family. The journalist, Walaa Al-Jaabari, was killed along with her five children, her husband, Amjad Al-Sha’er, and her unborn child, who was expelled from her womb due to the intensity of the strike.

With Al-Jabari's killing, the number of Palestinian journalists killed since the beginning of this year has risen to 34.

A recent mid-year report by the syndicate documented a surge increase rise violations and war crimes against press freedom in Gaza. During the first half of 2025, 41 family members of journalists have been killed, 32 homes belonging to journalists were destroyed, and at least 66 journalists sustained injuries — most due to gunfire or shrapnel.
