PM Mustafa: Hunger is a global shame; stopping bloodshed and starvation in Gaza are immediate priorities

RAMALLAH, July 20, 2025 (WAFA) - Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa expressed deep dismay on Sunday over the global silence in the face of the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

He stated, “It is incomprehensible and beyond belief that the situation in the Gaza Strip has been allowed to deteriorate to this appalling level. Humanity itself appears on the verge of collapse. That the world would tolerate our people dying of hunger—in this century, in this era—is absolutely unacceptable and unequivocally rejected. We will continue to raise our voices and do everything within our power to end this intolerable situation, which is not only inhumane but morally and politically unacceptable.”

The Prime Minister reaffirmed, on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas and the Government, unwavering commitment towards our people in Gaza, regardless of the circumstances, pressures, or sacrifices. “We are doing everything we can to save our people in Gaza and alleviate their suffering,” he emphasized.

In outlining the national priorities, Prime Minister Mustafa stressed that ending the bloodshed in Gaza remains the most urgent priority; launching reconstruction must follow immediately; and unifying Gaza and its institutions with national institutions in the West Bank is essential to begin the rebuilding process and realize the establishment of the independent Palestinian state on the ground.

The Prime Minister delivered his remarks during a meeting with the Palestinian Bar Association Council, held at the al-Quds/Jerusalem Center in al-Bireh and via video conference with participants from the Gaza Strip. The meeting was attended by Minister of Justice Sharhabil al-Zaeem, Cabinet Secretary-General Dawwas Dawwas, and several former Bar Association presidents.

During the meeting, he reiterated President Abbas’s clear vision: “We will accept nothing less than the establishment of the independent Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank, with Jerusalem as its capital. We will accept nothing less than a unified Gaza and West Bank under one system, one law, and a single legitimate authority.

Mustafa warned that while Gaza bears the brunt of the humanitarian catastrophe, other parts of the occupied Palestine remain under threat: “Jerusalem remains under constant targeting, and the West Bank continues to face relentless aggression. But what is unfolding in Gaza today defies any acceptable standard. We stress our unity—our unified voice, unified institutions, and unified unions—for the sake of Gaza. This is a national priority.”

He also warned of Israel’s intensified attacks on the northern West Bank, particularly on refugee camps: “The refugee issue is a cornerstone of our national consonants and principles. We will never abandon our camps. Preserving and defending them is a national duty and priority. Despite the ongoing incursions, we continue to do all we can to alleviate the suffering of our people.”

For his part, Bar Association President Fadi Abbas welcomed the visit, emphasizing partnership and cooperation with the Government in advancing the cause of the Palestinian people — particularly in rebuilding the justice sector in the Gaza Strip and defending Palestinian rights before relevant international courts.
