UN Rights Office: Israeli strike on Gaza church sheltering displaced civilians may constitute war crime

GAZA, July 19, 2025 (WAFA)  The spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Thameen Khaitan, stated that Israel's recent attack on a Gaza church sheltering displaced Palestinians “may amount to a war crime.”

In a press briefing late Saturday, Khaitan said the strike on the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza City, which was sheltering around 600 civilians, including children and persons with disabilities, raises serious concerns of grave violations of international law, especially with regard to attacks on places of worship and civilian areas.

Al-Khitan emphasized the need to adhere to international humanitarian law, adding that "the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian areas constitutes a war crime."

He further confirmed that the UN Human Rights Council is currently examining the details of the attack.
