Israeli forces continue home demolitions in Nour Shams refugee camp

TULKARM, May 29, 2025 (WAFA) — Israeli occupation forces continued large-scale demolitions of homes in Nour Shams refugee camp, east of Tulkarm in the northern occupied West Bank, according to local sources.

WAFA correspondent reported that Israeli bulldozers, backed by infantry units, pressed ahead with demolitions around Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque in the heart of the camp. The destruction is part of a broader Israeli plan to demolish 106 housing structures, including 48 within Nour Shams camp, with the rest being in the nearby Tulkarm refugee camp.

During the demolitions today, Israeli soldiers opened live fire toward civilians and journalists positioned in a wooded area opposite the camp as they watched the demolition of their homes. The gunfire was intended to drive them away, sparking fear and panic, though no injuries were reported.

In a further escalation, Israeli forces stormed Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque in the camp, climbed to its rooftop, and raised the Israeli flag on the mosque’s minaret—an act widely viewed as provocative and deeply offensive by local residents.

Residents attempting to retrieve belongings from homes slated for demolition were prevented from doing so, despite having prior coordination. Israeli troops subjected them to ID checks and interrogations, ultimately barring many from entering. Live ammunition was also fired indiscriminately in the area, contributing to the chaos.

Humanitarian workers were not spared. According to Manal Al-Hafi, director of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in Tulkarm, Israeli forces directly fired at a PRCS administrative vehicle as it was en route to assist displaced residents. A volunteer coordinator was also assaulted while performing his duties inside the camp.

This latest wave of demolitions is part of Israel’s declared plan, announced on May 1, to demolish 106 homes and buildings across Tulkarm and Nour Shams refugee camps. Of these, 48 are located in Nour Shams. The targeted neighborhoods include Al-Manshiya, Al-Maslakh, Al-Jamia, the Al-Eyada area, and Al-Shuhada.
