UNICEF sounds alarm as child casualties in Gaza surpass 50,000

GAZA, May 28, 2025 (WAFA) – More than 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed or wounded in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli aggression since October 7, 2023, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

In a statement published Wednesday, Edward Beigbeder, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, described the war’s toll on children as catastrophic.

He referenced footage from a strike on Friday in Khan Younis, where the charred and dismembered bodies of children from the Al-Najjar family were pulled from the rubble of their home. Of ten siblings under the age of 12, only one reportedly survived—with severe injuries.

In a separate attack early Monday morning, a strike hit a school sheltering civilians in Gaza City, killing at least 31 people, including 18 children, according to reports.

Since the breaking of a temporary ceasefire on March 18, 1,309 children have been killed and 3,738 injured, UNICEF reported. The total number of child casualties since the war began now exceeds 50,000.
