President Abbas briefs Arab ambassadors in Moscow on grave situation in Palestine, push for UN membership

MOSCOW, May 10, 2025 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas received Arab ambassadors accredited to Russia at his residence in Moscow on Saturday, where he briefed them on the dire conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories amid the ongoing Israeli military assault on Gaza and the escalating settler violence in the West Bank, including Jerusalem.

President Abbas discussed with the Arab diplomats the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, and the increasing attacks by Israeli forces and extremist colonists. He reiterated the urgent need to end the Israeli aggression on Gaza, provide humanitarian aid, and halt the ongoing war of extermination against the Palestinian people.

He also discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts with Arab states and international partners to convene a global peace conference in New York in upcoming June. The goal, he said, is to rally support for full UN membership for the State of Palestine and to initiate a political process to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

President Abbas stressed the importance of immediate humanitarian access to Gaza, including food, water, medicine, and fuel, and reiterated the State of Palestine’s readiness to lead reconstruction efforts and facilitate the return of displaced people.

The meeting was attended by PLO Executive Committee member Ahmad Majdalani; Presidential Advisor Yasser Abbas; Supervisor of the Official Media, Minister Ahmad Assaf; and Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal.

The President arrived in Moscow on Thursday at the official invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the 80th anniversary commemorations of the victory over Nazism.
