MADRID, April 24, 2025 (WAFA) – The Spanish Government on Thursday scrapped a €6.8 million deal to buy ammunition from an Israeli company after a member of the ruling coalition said it was a "blatant violation" of a ban on trading arms with the country, according to AFP.
Spain's Interior Ministry had sought to negotiate a termination of the €6.8 million ($7.8m) contract with Israeli firm IMI Systems to supply bullets to the Spanish Civil Guard.
According to AFP after "exhausting all paths of negotiation", the offices of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Sumar's Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, and "the competent ministries have decided to cancel unilaterally the ammunition purchase contract with Israeli company IMI Systems", the government sources said.
"The investment board for dual-use material will deny this company permission to import this equipment to our country for reasons of general interest and, immediately afterwards, the interior ministry will terminate the contract," the sources added.
“You cannot do business with those who violate international law while they massacre the Palestinian people,” Sumar posted on the social network Bluesky as reported by Anadolu Agency.
“We did it after demanding it firmly: for coherence, for justice, for Palestine,” the party added.
According to the Guardian, Prime Minister Sánchez questioned whether Israeli military actions comply with international humanitarian law, describing the rising Palestinian death toll as “truly unbearable”.
His government has also officially recognised a Palestinian State and pledged not to engage in arms trade with Israel since the onset of the genocidal aggression on Gaza on 7 October, 2023.
