President Abbas meets Egyptian counterpart on sidelines of emergency Arab summit in Cairo

CAIRO, March 5, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas held on Tuesday night a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the emergency Arab Summit held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

President Abbas expressed his gratitude to his Egyptian counterpart for hosting the summit to discuss the developments of the Palestinian issue. He commended the Egyptian-Palestinian-Arab plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, ensuring that the Palestinians remain on their land without being displaced.

The president also praised Egypt’s steadfast positions and unwavering support for the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to embody an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He highlighted Egypt's consistent national stance, aligning with the Palestinian position in rejecting the displacement of the Palestinian people and the attempt to empty the land of its inhabitants, as well as Egypt's efforts to halt the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

The President reaffirmed that the Gaza Strip is an integral and inseparable part of the State of Palestine, which holds full political and legal authority over it, just as it does over the rest of Palestinian territories. He added that necessary plans have been devised to provide essential services for the return of the Palestinian people to their homes, in preparation for reconstruction with contributions from Arab and international friendly countries.

President Abbas emphasized that the priority is to solidify the ceasefire, deliver humanitarian aid, ensure the full withdrawal of Israeli forces and restore the full responsibilities of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza.

Additionally, the President stressed the importance of resuming Palestinian governmental operations to provide essential services and enabling the agreed-upon task force to begin its work. Furthermore, President Abbas underscored the need for efforts to halt all unilateral actions, including colonial activities and attempts to annex Palestinian land in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The President called on the international community, led by the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council, to assume responsibility and compel the occupying power to halt its continuous aggression against the Palestinian people, land and holy sites, as well as to stop colonial projects and the annexation and expansionist policies that challenge international legitimacy and law.

President Abbas reiterated that security, peace and stability in the region cannot be achieved without the realization of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The President expressed his deep appreciation to President Sisi for his steadfast support of the Palestinian people’s rights and extended his thanks to the Egyptian government and people for the humanitarian aid they have provided to the Gaza Strip.

The President also expressed his pride in the deep-rooted historical and brotherly relations between Egypt and Palestine, affirming his commitment to further developing and strengthening these relations.

The meeting was attended by Hussein al-Sheikh, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization; Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Mustafa; President's Diplomatic Advisor, Majdi Khaldi; and Palestinian Ambassador to Cairo, Diab Louh.
