Ireland rejects Israeli proposal to accept displaced Palestinians from Gaza

DUBLIN, February 6, 2025 (WAFA) – The Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected today the proposal put forward by Israeli ‘Defense Minister’ Israel Katz regarding the potential reception of Palestinian refugees from Gaza.

In a statement, the ministry emphasized that the focus should be on significantly increasing aid to Gaza, restoring essential services, and establishing a clear framework for displaced individuals to return to their homes. The ministry further stated that any comments contradicting this goal were "counterproductive and a source of disturbance."

Israel's Defense Minister Katz had suggested that countries such as Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which recognized Palestine as a state last year, were "legally obligated" to allow Palestinians from Gaza to enter their territories.

This proposal has been met with significant resistance, with Spain also rejecting Katz’s suggestion. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares responded by saying, "Gaza is the land of the Palestinian people, and it should be part of the future Palestinian state."
