CAIRO, December 19, 2024 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas met today with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo for important talks on regional issues and latest developments in the political arena.
During the meeting, President Abbas expressed his gratitude to President el-Sisi for inviting him to participate in the Summit of the Group of 8 Developing Countries, which focuses on defending the economic interests of developing nations and their populations.
The summit aims to expand cooperation opportunities for these countries and create alternatives on the international stage, ultimately enhancing the economic and social role of youth and driving comprehensive, sustainable development.
President Abbas also praised Egypt's steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, highlighting Egypt's continuous efforts in advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people. He emphasized the importance of the Palestinian right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as Egypt's ongoing efforts to mediate reconciliation and halt Israeli aggression.
The two leaders discussed the ongoing humanitarian disaster caused by Israel’s brutal war on Gaza, the escalating violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the continuing crimes committed by Israeli settlers against the defenseless Palestinian population.
President Abbas condemned the ongoing killing, incursions into Palestinian cities, villages, and refugee camps, as well as the expansion of illegal settlements and violations of religious sanctities by the Israeli occupation, particularly in the occupied capital.
The meeting also included discussions on joint efforts between the Palestinian and Egyptian leaderships to achieve an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, ensure a full Israeli withdrawal from the territory, accelerate humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, and implement the International Court of Justice's ruling in accordance with the General Assembly's decision.
They also addressed the call for an international peace conference and continued efforts toward securing full United Nations membership for Palestine.
President Abbas emphasized the importance of mobilizing international support for Palestine’s bid to gain full membership in the United Nations and to achieve further international recognition of the State of Palestine.
The two presidents agreed to strengthen bilateral relations across all sectors and continue their close coordination on issues of mutual interest, furthering cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting was attended by key Palestinian officials, including Hussein al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), Ziyad Abu Amro, PLO Executive Committee member, Majdi Khalidi, President Abbas’s diplomatic advisor, and Diab al-Louh, Palestinian Ambassador to Egypt.
