OTTAWA, November 15, 2024 (WAFA) – Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has expressed deep concern over the “catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Gaza, warning that acute malnutrition levels have reached life-threatening extremes.

In a statement, Joly referred to a report by the Famine Review Committee released on November 8, which highlighted a strong likelihood of famine or an impending famine in areas of northern Gaza. The report also indicated that over 133,000 people in the region are experiencing catastrophic food insecurity.

Joly, along with International Development Minister, pointed out that these dire conditions are resulting in the death of civilians – men, women, and children – due to the severe shortage of humanitarian aid allowed to enter Gaza. Despite efforts to provide relief, the Canadian officials emphasized that aid is still insufficient and fails to reach those who depend on it for survival.

The statement also noted that humanitarian organizations and workers continue to face significant barriers, many of which could be removed to facilitate greater assistance.

Furthermore, the ministers called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, urging it to allow a substantial and sustained increase in humanitarian aid to civilian populations in Gaza.
