CAPE TOWN, October 5, 2024 (WAFA) — A massive demonstration took place in Cape Town today, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Approximately 60,000 participants gathered to express their solidarity with the Palestinian cause, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans condemning the Israeli occupation and the relentless atrocities in Gaza.
Protesters voiced their support for South Africa's legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). As part of their efforts, demonstrators submitted a petition to the South African Parliament, calling for the establishment of a parliamentary unit to combat the Israeli apartheid system.
In December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel at the ICJ, alleging violations of the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
The South African government has requested the court to consider urgent measures in light of the critical situation in Gaza, with hearings on these precautionary measures held in The Hague on January 11 and 12 of this year.
