Family of U.S. activist killed by Israeli forces demands independent investigation

RAMALLAH, September 8, 2024 (WAFA) – The family of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist killed by Israeli forces in Beita village south of Nablus, has called for an independent investigation into her murder.

Eygi, 26, was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier while participating in the weekly anti-settlement demonstration in Beita on Friday. She was taken to Rafidia Governmental Hospital in Nablus, where doctors pronounced her dead due to her critical injuries.

In a statement, her family said: “She was taken from our lives in a manner that was both unlawful and violent by the Israeli army.”

The family added, “Aysenur, an American citizen, was peacefully advocating for justice when she was shot by what video footage shows was an Israeli sniper.”

The statement further called on U.S. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to instruct an independent investigation into the illegal killing of an American citizen and ensure full accountability for those responsible.

Eygi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement, which confirmed her participation in the anti-settlement protest in Beita on Friday.

The International Solidarity Movement rejected Israeli claims that activists had thrown stones at Israeli soldiers, labeling the accusations as “false.”

The organization stated: “Aysenur was over 200 meters away from the Israeli soldiers at the time of her killing, and there was no confrontation in the minutes preceding her death.”
