Safadi and Lazzarini discuss preparations for a ministerial meeting in support of UNRWA

AMMAN, Tuesday, September 03, 2024 (WAFA) – Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini today discussed preparations for a ministerial meeting in support of the agency.

Safadi and Lazzarini discussed preparations for the high-level ministerial meeting that would be co-hosted by Jordan and Sweden in support of Palestinian refugees and the UNRWA on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month.

They touched upon UNRWA’s essential role in easing the suffering of the Palestinian refugees and emphasized the importance that the international community provides political and financial support to the agency, so as it could continue its core functions and services.

Safadi condemned all measures taken by the Israeli occupation authorities against the agency, affirming that they are in violation of international law and should be met with an immediate international action.

He stressed that none of the actors could assume UNRWA’s main role, particularly in the war-torn Gaza Strip afflicted by the Israeli genocidal aggression, which resulted in the killing of 40,819 Palestinians and injuring 94,291 others.

Lazzarini commended Sweden for its ongoing support to the UNRWA’s efforts aimed at not only ensuring the delivery of humanitarian and relief aid to the Strip but also at mobilizing international support to the agency to enable it to execute its mandate and ensure that agency is able to continue delivering vital services to over 5.9 million refugees in its five areas of operation.
