ICJ delivers advisory opinion on Israeli occupation

THE HAGUE, Friday, July 19, 2024 (WAFA) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) convened Friday evening to deliver an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967.

The ICJ is holding a public sitting at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, during which Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the Court, will read out the advisory opinion.

The ICJ’s decision could increase pressure on Israel over its ongoing genocidal onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

This development coincides with a separate case brought by South Africa to the ICJ, accusing Israel of committing genocide in the war-torn coastal enclave.

In January, the ICJ ordered Israel to prevent genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza, allow more humanitarian aid to enter and preserve evidence of violations.

On 30 December, 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territories since 1967, how the policies and practices of Israel affect the legal status of the Occupation, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all states and the UN from this status.
