Prisoners institution: Some Gaza detainees in Israeli prisons had their limbs amputated without anesthesia

RAMALLAH, July 2, 2023 (WAFA) - The Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) said that some detainees from the Gaza Strip, who are held in Israeli occupation prisons, have had their limbs amputated without anesthesia.

In a statement reviewing the most salient facts about the Gaza detainees' issue, PPS said some detainees had their limbs amputated due to injuries sustained from shackles and cuffs during their detention.

PPS pointed out that the occupation keeps detainees restrained; cuffed, shackled and blindfolded the whole time. The detainees were subjected to beatings with the use of all means and tools, including attacking them with batons and police dogs.

PPs stressed that the occupation is committing the crimes of forced starvation and humiliation; with the use of various means and tools, including insulting them at all times and forcing them to say words that violate their dignity, along with intimidation and threats.

According to the statement, the occupation prevents detainees from communicating with each other. If prisoners attempt to speak to each other, they are subjected to torture and punishment. Some testimonies reported being subjected to sexual violence and rape.

The prisoner institution said detainees were forced to use their shoes as pellows and were forbidden from praying or performing any religious rituals. Shower time and using the bathroom were also limited to one minute.

These testimonies came following limited lawyers’ visits to a number of Gaza detainees, including visits to the Sde Teman camp, where detainees have been facing brutal maltreatment, including torture and medical crimes, along other human rights violations.

Gaza detainees are distributed throughout several other prisons, where they also face systematic torture.

PPS said the testimonies of Gaza detainees reflect the unprecedented level of the occupation’s torture, abuse and forced starvation.

The number of Palestinian detainees who were killed in Israeli prisons and detention camps as a result of torture since the beginning of the Israeli aggression and genocide on October 7, 2023, is the highest in the history of the Palestinian prisoners' movement. The majority of detainees were from Gaza.

PPS said until the moment, thousands of families know nothing about the fate of their detained children, particularly after October 7.

PPS affirmed its continued efforts with several Palestinian rights organizations, and others inside the 1948 occupied land to find out their whereabouts and seek visitations, which are done under tight restrictions and obstacles.

The total number of Palestinians detained after October 7 has so far risen to about 9,490, including those detained in their  homes and at military checkpoints, and those forced to turn themselves in under pressure.
