OSLO, Thursday, June 27, 2024 (WAFA) – The Norwegian Refugee Council has warned of an impending famine in central and southern Gaza, which has been under continuous Israeli assault for nearly nine months.
Majed Qishawi, the council's education officer, delivered the alarming update in a press statement detailing the current conditions in Gaza. He highlighted that people are already suffering from famine in the central and southern regions.
Qishawi emphasized, "All indicators say that we will reach a point where they literally can’t find anything to eat if the situation persists, if the crossing, the main source of food supplies, remains closed. Farms are all destroyed.”
He stressed that the limited food supplies currently available in Gaza cannot sustain indefinitely.
The council further explained that humanitarian response in southern and central Gaza has almost halted due to escalating security concerns, dwindling supplies, and coordination challenges faced by humanitarian organizations.
With the increasing needs in the region, the council underscored that humanitarian workers' ability to respond is diminishing.
