UNSC convenes on the situation on the Middle East, implementation of Resolution 2334

NEW YORK, Tuesday, June 25, 2024 (WAFA) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today convened a monthly session on the situation on the Middle East and a quarterly meeting on the implementation of Resolution 2334.

Speaking before UNSC, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, stated: “The world’s eyes are, rightfully, on Gaza. But we cannot ignore the situation in the West Bank.”

She expressed her concern “by the significant uptick in deadly violence against Palestinian civilians by settlers in the West Bank – and condemn it in the strongest terms,” while noting that “Last year saw the highest number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank since the UN began collecting data in 2005.”

She affirmed that Washington “will use the tools at our disposal to expose and promote accountability for those who threaten peace, security, and stability there” and recalled that Washington has sanctioned a number of extremist settlers and their organizations involved in acts of violence.

She pointed out that “With much of Gaza’s population facing catastrophic levels of hunger, the situation is at risk of worsening rapidly — especially with sustained disruptions in aid flows.”

“People are suffering every single day. Palestinian children, women, and men suffering every single day,” she added, while adding that Washington continues “to press Israel to create better conditions for facilitating aid delivery inside Gaza.”
