Presidential envoy attends the inauguration of El Salvador president

SAN SALVADOR, Tuesday, June 04, 2024 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ Special Envoy Riyad Malki has attended the inauguration ceremony of the President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele at the National Palace in San Salvador.

Malki, who serves as the presidential advisor for international relations, joined a host of officials and diplomats from around the world in the official inauguration ceremony of Bukele, who hails from Palestinian origins and is now serving a second five-year term.

Malki conveyed President Abbas’ warm greetings to the Salvadoran President-elect Bukele, wishing him success in serving his country and expressing hope that he would foster Salvador’s relations with Palestine, the homeland of Bukele’s forefathers, who immigrated to El Salvador over a century ago.

President-elect Bukele affirmed his own as well as his country’s solidarity with the Palestinian people in their harsh ordeal and oppression, particularly the ongoing Israeli genocidal aggression against and destruction of the Gaza Strip.

He underscored his country’s willingness to foster bilateral relations with Palestine as well as his wish to appoint a non-resident ambassador to Palestine as a first step towards this end.

Presidential envoy Malki expressed his gratitude to Salvadoran President-elect Bukele for voting in favor of Palestine in the United Nations and invited him to visit Palestine at his convenience, which Bukele accepted.  

Among the officials and diplomats were attended the inauguration ceremony were Chinese President Xi Jinping's Special Envoy and Minister of Culture and Tourism Sun Yeli, King Felipe VI of Spain, President of Argentina Javier Milei, President of Ecuador Daniel Noboa, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, President of Paraguay Santiago Peña, President of Costa Rica Rodrigo Chávez and President of Honduras Xiomara Castro.
