JEDDAH, Sunday, June 2, 2024 (WAFA) - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the illegal actions of the Israeli occupation authorities aiming to undermine the mandate and role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), through attempts to label it as a "terrorist organization" and revoke its immunities and privileges, coinciding with the upsurge of direct attacks against its facilities.
In a statement released today, the OIC slammed such actions as an extension of Israel's serious violations of the United Nations Charter, the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, the Fourth Geneva Convention and relevant UN resolutions.
The OIC reiterated the mandate granted to UNRWA by the United Nations and the necessity of maintaining UNRWA’s role and responsibilities, which the statement stressed is a top priority in terms of policy, humanitarian and relief perspectives and as a key element for stability in the region
The OIC said it remained committed to UNRWA’s mandate as a sign of global commitment towards the rights of Palestine refugees and keeping the collective memory of their issue alive and on the international community’s agenda.
It called on the international community to strengthen support for UNRWA and ensure its ability to continue providing basic services to Palestinian refugees, especially in light of the deepening and stifling humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
