LONDON, Thursday, May 30, 2024 (WAFA) – A UK official today voiced concerns over Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to further restrict the Palestinian Authority’s finances.
“We need an effective Palestinian Authority for lasting peace,” UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Cameron stated on X platform.
“Concerned to see proposals from Finance Minister Smotrich to impose further restrictions on PA finances & expand settlements in the West Bank - such measures would harm chances for peace, security & stability,” he added.
Cameron’s statements came days after ultranationalist Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich threatened to cut off the transfer of funds to the PA after the announcement by Norway, Spain and Ireland that they would unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state.
The far-right minister also said he would not extend the indemnity given to Israeli banks that transfer funds to banks in the West Bank, which is due to expire on July 1.
