UN Special Coordinator condemns Israeli airstrikes targeting displaced persons’ tents in Rafah

JERUSALEM, Monday, May 27, 2024 (WAFA) - UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, condemned last night’s Israeli airstrikes which targeted the tents of displaced people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and tragically led to the reported loss of dozens of Palestinian lives, including women and children, and dozens of injuries.

He expressed deep trouble by the killing of so many women and children in an area where people have sought shelter.

He called upon the Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into this incident, hold those responsible for any wrongdoing to account and take immediate steps in order to better protect civilians.

He reiterated the call made by UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, for an immediate ceasefire to end the suffering of civilians.

“The United Nations remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at ending the hostilities, reducing tensions and advancing the cause of peace.”
